Name: Chris Singleton
District: Leeds
Specialist area: Theatre, spoken word, young people

Bio: Chris is a queer, ADHD poet and playwright based in Leeds, and
Artistic Director of Brave Words (www.bravewords.co.uk). His debut
show How to Be a Better Human used poetry and comedy to tell Chris’
personal story of losing dad and wife within the same few months;
finding the lightness and humour in death and divorce, and exploring
how we can lose everything and still find the strength to rebuild. It toured
extensively to theatres and venues across the UK, including a full run at
Edinburgh Fringe with Summerhall (“a refreshing message in a likeable,
low-key spoken word show” – Lyn Gardner, The Stage, **** – The Wee
Review, **** – Ed Fringe Review: “A man sharing to help others, creating
something out of pain in a way that’s impossible not to get behind”) In
2021 Chris’ debut poetry pamphlet The Kidnapping of Self-Kindness was
published by Indigo Dreams. He was shortlisted for Best Spoken Word
Performer and Best Spoken Word Show at the Saboteur Awards 2022,
for the Birds of Paradise Exceptional Theatre Award and the Lancaster
Playwriting Prize 2023. His writing has been described as “candid,
unafraid, harrowing, startling and compassionate in all the best ways”
(Dawn Bauling, Indigo Dreams.) His debut play MUTTON is “a timely
reflection on poverty and its effects…provocative, delivered with warmth,
humour and beautiful atmosphere.”
