Becky

Name: Becky Pugh
District: Across Yorkshire with Music Studio in Huddersfield
Specialist Area: Music as an intervention for Young People in
Extremely Challenging Circumstances

Bio: I am Deputy Director at Yorkshire Youth & Music. I want to
ensure every young person has access to the performing arts and
enjoy seeing the benefit of long term participation for young people
who thought that they had no way of turning their lives around.
Over the years I have worked as a project manager in music
education, performing arts and for Kirklees Council. I have a high
level of knowledge of the Kirklees area and what is on offer. This
knowledge is expanding across Yorkshire, helping me signpost and
link to new delivery partners.
Fun/Interesting fact:I grew up in London, but I feel Yorkshire is my
home.
Organisation: Yorkshire Youth and Music
About: Yorkshire Youth & Music is a community music education
company working across the whole of Yorkshire to improve lives
through music. We facilitate high quality learning opportunities in
music making and other arts for disadvantaged young people in
challenging circumstances, across all music styles, and according to
young people’s needs and aspirations. We provide excellent training
and development opportunities for professionals involved in young
people’s lives. We specialise in long-term work with very vulnerable
young people, including those secure children’s homes, Prison Mother
& Baby Units, Young Offenders Institutes, in-patient psychiatric care
and hospitals.

We build solid & enduring partnerships with organisations concerned
with young people’s care, welfare and education; Youth Justice
Services, the NHS, Secure Children’s Homes, and Virtual Schools.
Our delivery is 1:1 or small groups, we are generally and specifically
trauma informed about each young person; delivering bespoke music
activity built around individual psychological, behavioural, educational
and health related needs of young people, through an ongoing
consultation process with teaching, care and therapeutic staff.
Partner staff have reported that this work helps them build positive
relationships with young people in their care, and gain a better
understanding of their lives.
We document musical journeys through work in progress, completed
works, young people’s conversations with project workers and the
views of their clinical or care teams on their progress and
development. We use music making to address their whole situation,
risky or harmful attitudes and behaviours, discuss their fears,
thoughts and aspirations with the aim of re-engaging with learning,
building social connections and trust, friendships and enjoyment. We
aim to ensure continuity of music leaders working with young people
to help them build trusted relationships with adults.
